What is Catnip?
Catnip, also known as Nepeta cataria, is a herb that belongs to the mint family. It contains a chemical compound called nepetalactone that triggers a euphoric response in cats. When cats smell or ingest it, they can become playful, hyperactive, and even drool.
Can Dogs Eat Catnip?
Yes, dogs can eat catnip without causing harm. Unlike cats who have a strong reaction to this herb due to their unique genetics and biology, dogs are not affected by its chemical compound. In fact, some dog treats contain small amounts of catnip as an added flavoring.
Should You Give Your Dog Catnip?
While giving your dog catnip is not harmful per se, it’s also not necessary. Since dogs do not experience the same effects as cats from catnip ingestion or sniffing it out there are really no advantages for them consuming it either. However if you do give your dog cat nip be sure to closely monitor how much they consume and any changes in behavior just in case!
Dangers of Excessive Catnip Consumption
In rare cases where a dog ingests excessive amounts of cat nip there may be symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea but these usually disappear quickly on their own accord and don’t pose serious threats afterwords unless the pet has pre-existing health issues which would require veterinary attention regardless of what they ate!
